Back up and restore your site

What’s backed up, how long it’s kept and how to roll back.

Check your coverage

Open your site’s Backups page. When your plan includes backups, a daily backup saves your WordPress files and database and keeps them for the retention period your plan shows. You can also create up to three manual backups per day — useful right before a big change. Each backup shows whether it is stored on your server or in off-server storage. Keep a separate copy of anything you can’t afford to lose.

Before you change things

Create a manual backup before plugin upgrades, file edits or promoting a staging copy. A staging copy is not a backup — it’s a place to test. If you also use a backup plugin inside WordPress, check that it completes and stores its archive somewhere off the site.

Restore a backup

Choose a completed backup, select Restore and type RESTORE to confirm. Restoring replaces files and the database with that copy — newer orders, posts and settings are overwritten, and a recovery backup is taken first. Keep the page open to follow progress; the site may be briefly unavailable.

If a restore fails

Don’t retry repeatedly. Open Get help with the site name and the backup’s date, and tell us what you were trying to recover — we’ll pick the safest copy together.
